چکیده

The rates of polymerization and depolymerization of identical concentrated deoxygenated hemoglobin S (HbS) solutions following a rapid temperature change were examined by several methods. Two of these methods measured viscosity changes in either gently agitated (AGT) or nonagitated (NAGT) samples. The third method utilized a change in turbidity at 735 nm (SDT). By all three methods. a delay period. during which no observable change was detected.

A non-electrolyte haemolysis assay for diagnosis and prognosis of sickle cell disease

Abstract  Red blood cells (RBCs) from patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) lyse in deoxygenated isosmotic non-electrolyte solutions. Haemolysis has features which suggest that it is linked to activation of the pathway termed Psickle. This pathway is usually described as a non-specific cationic conductance activated by deoxygenation, HbS polymerisation and RBC sickling. The current work addre...

Oxygen binding and its allosteric control in hemoglobin of the pulmonate snail, Biomphalaria glabrata.

Pulmonate snails that experience extreme variations in gas tensions and temperatures possess extracellular, high-molecular mass (∼1.7 × 106 Da) hemoglobins (Hbs) that are little known as regards oxygenation and allosteric characteristics. Biomphalaria glabrata hemolymph exhibits a high O2 affinity (half-saturation O2 tension = 6.1 mmHg; pH 7.7, 25°C), pronounced Bohr effect (Bohr factor = -0.5)...

Partitioning of benzene in blood: influence of hemoglobin type in humans and animals.

Earlier studies have shown that air/blood partition coefficients (PCs) for many volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) are much higher in rat blood than in human blood. It has been suggested that the discrepancy could be attributed to the fact that hemoglobin (Hb) in rat blood exists in a quasi-crystalline form of hydrophobicity greater than that of normal human Hb (HbA) and thus has a higher carryi...

Adsorption of Basic Organic Colorants from an Aqua Binary Mixture by Diatomite

D iatomite is an inexpensive natural mineral. It can be used as an adsorbent to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from the waste waters without further improvement. In this research, the adsorption of two different basic colorants including Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) and Malachite Green (MG) by diatomite has been investigated in an aqua binary mixture and the effects of different parameters h...
